How do you set footers to be repeated on all odd (even) pages? The odd pages would have the same footer and the even pages would have a different but the same footer.

If you create your document using facing pages (there's an option to do this in the New Document dialog box), open the document layout palette (F10) and double-click on the master page (normally called A-Master A).

You now have a left and right page. Add whatever elements you need to these, and they will show up on any new page you create in your document, provided they are based on these master pages.

For example, in the left master page, create a textbox with the word 'LEFT', and create the word 'RIGHT' in the right hand page. Now return to your document by double-clicking on Page 1 in the document layout palette. Go to the Page menu and select 'Insert'. Add a few pages, being sure to base them on A-Master A, and look at your document. Odd & Even pages have different text.

I am using Version 4.1 QuarkXPress for Windows

I opened a new document - the facing pages option is checked
I clicked ok
I clicked on F10 - nothing happened
I checked under View - Show Document Layout is F4, so I clicked F4 (already
i'm suspicious)
A-Master A page icon [Document Layout] comes up

I tried F10 again - nothing happened

I double clicked on the Page icon with the A in the middle of it - nothing
happened

I double clicked on the Page 1 words in the border of the "box" - that
opened up another choice list called "Section" - nothing there regarding
right left, just the manner of formatting the pages and the page numbers

I double clicked on the A-Master A and something popped up at the very left
margin that looks kind of like locks -

I double clicked on the upper border (blue) and the whole box showing the
page icon "slides" closed.

I checked in the Keyboard commands and don't find how to use F10 for my
purpose - there are three different uses for F10 and they are all on the
Item Menu under Edit: (1) F10, (2) Ctrl+F10, (3) Ctrl+Shift+F10. None of
these appears to work for making anything like facing pages.

So - where to go from here???

I didn't even figure out how to add pages - what did i do wrong??

Ok, don't worry about F10 - that's just the shortcut on the Mac version I'm using. As long as you have the document layout palette open, you're ok.

When you double-clicked on A-Master A (the one with 'locks') you opened a Master Page. This is ok. If you zoom out, you should see two blank pages side by side. Now anything you place on these pages will automatically appear on any new pages added to your document. You can add an appropriate footer, for example, to the left page, and a different footer to the right page.

When you're done adding these elements, you need to return to your actual document. Double-click the page icon with the A in it to return to it.

When you zoom out to look at the whole page, you should see whatever elements you added to the right hand page appear on this page too (facing pages always begin on the right hand page).

To add more pages, you have a few options. One way is to use the document layout palette. Simply drag the A-Master A page down below page 1. Dragging it to the left of the line will create a new left hand page, or to the right to create a new right hand page.

You can continue doing this if you like, but if you need to add a few pages at once, it's easier to look for the Page menu. The first option in this menu is 'Insert' which brings up a dialog box asking you how many pages you want to add to the document. It also asks you what Master page you want to base it on (you can actually have several master pages in the one document). In this case, you should set it to A-Master A.

Hope this helps!
