I need to join a W2K Pro laptop to a remote NT4 domain. I have admin rights in both, and can ping the remote BDC/WINS server and DNS server successfully my name and IP. I get the "username/password" box, and enter remotedomain\username and then password. After about 20 seconds, I get error "the specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted".

Have you added the laptop to the domain? right click on the 'my computer' icon, choose properties and choose th enetwork identification tab. from there you can add the laptop to the domain.

hope this helps.

I can't add it to the domain, that is the problem. I get the error message when I try to do so.

OK, that error is caused by a DNS server that is not responding to a request for a SRV record.
You can remove the DNS entries and try to add the laptop that way, and if that doesn't work, you could try to use the NETDOM command to join the domain.
Otherwise, you may have to update your DNS server so it can handle SRV requests.

Sorry for the confusion earlier, hope this helps!

Dekai,

Two things for my two cents worth - Has this computer ever been joined to that domain before? If so the computer may need to be deleted from the domain prior to re-joining the domain. Lastly if it is a DNS issue you can always use your lmhost files on the laptop to resolve any names / computers locally instead of over the network. That could be an issue because it is remote and the DNS/WINS information could be of that local network not of the remote (joining) network.

just mho

Actually, I got it working today. I ran thru a checklist someone posted in the W2K server forum (check DNS, WINS, etc) and was able to do all that, but still didn't work. This morning we promoted the BDC to PDC (for unrelated reason), and suddenly able to join the domain. The previous PDC's gateway was set so that I couldn't ping it, but could ping the new PCD/old BDC...
Thanks everyone.
