Initially I had a problem of promoting a Windows 2003 server to an existing 2000 AD Domain Controller. Soko mentioned that I have a DNS problem. Did more reeaser on the 2000 Ad that under the forward lookup zones, there is no _msdsc zone at all while I find that line in another windows 2000 DC. Soko provided me a link which told me to do these steps :

1) ran netdiag/fix and to check if that did anything. It did not fix the problem.

2) recreated the zones manually as per instruction. Stopped and restarted netlogon service. Still the same problem.

I looked at the cmd prompt where I did the netdiag /fix line I get a whole bunch of errors :

DNS Test .............. Failed

[Warning] Cannot find a primary authoritative DNS server for the name 'computer name'. [rcode_server_failure]
the name 'computername' may not be registered in the DNS
and whole bunch after that

I think it is because it is the _msdcs _sites. How do you manualyy add that? I cannot demote the dc because that is the only DC available for the group to use. THanks for your help.

If this post does not make any sense please let me know I will change it. Thanks for your help Soko thanks for your advice you were right.
