Read MSN 8.0 has WIN98 minimum requirement.
Read AOL 8.0 has WIN98 minimum requirement.

Thank you for any info.

Windows 95 is certainly on its way out - support is gradually being withdrawn and its often left out when new versions of M$ and other common software are produced. But what you've got will probably run quite happily for some years yet - you'll just have to invest in new hardware/operating system if you want to stay with the ongoing update cycle.

You should remember that Win 95 is getting a bit long in the tooth now and you would be well advised to upgrade to Win98. You don't mention the size ofyour hard drive which would affect future upgrading. I would suggest you install Win98SE and have at least a 20GB hard drive. Either way you have a bit of work ahead of you. It is enjoyable work though.

rrsub - have you read your link - Win95 end of life, December 2002!

Thanks to "rrsub, davidelnormal, wolluf" :

I printed out some of those pages pertaining to the LIFECYCLES - haven't read them carefully yet.

Yes, I realize that it is time for a whole NEW computer and am aiming to get one during the early part of 2003.

I want to invest around $2,000 and "build my own system."

QUESTIONS:
1) Should I go with WIN98SE or WINDOWS XP - I do like to tweak and realize Win98SE is still similar to Win95 - but heard Win XP is not for "tweakers" . . . or something about that.

2) In my list of computer components to buy . . . I have listed the "AMD ATHLON XP2200" Processor - should I go for the NEWER "AMD ATHLON XP2600" or the latest ATHLON that happens to be out in early 2003?

Thanks for the good advice and info.

XP for me...and I'm a dedicated dinker.

As for CPU's...I go for the "sweet spot"...where prices climb steadily $20 or so with each rise...until 1 big rise...and settle back to the last 1.
The latest 1 is OVERpriced IMHO.
If you go with the right motherboard...the CPU may be upgraded before you hand the system over to your mother-in-law.
