I have a win2k computer that i'm trying to put on my 60+ computer network, but it's not seeing the network. I can ping any computer on the network and get responses. I can do a loopback ping and it works. I have the TCP/IP set and working same as the rest of the building, as well as netBUI, but i still cant see the network. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Can you get to the internet? I'm having some problems similar. Certain cards, AOpens, only see part of the network. But if I go to a browser and type \\servername, it shows up. I'm going to update the drivers on the nics. (New cards, too.) Good luck

No, i cant get to the internet. The activity lights are blinking. This is a new card and i just installed the drivers.

Check to see if you have old hosts and lmhosts files that might be giving it old dns addresses or something like that. What do you get if you go to a command prompt and type in ipconfig /all

All the current info i just put in there....

Host name - louscomp
primary dns suffux - blank
node type - broadcast
IP routing enabled - no
WINS - no
Connection specific DNS - blank

everything below that is just the stuff i put in...

The computer is even showing up on Cyberpatrol as trying to surf the net, even though it can't. weird

Your'e not running dns or wins. Try a route print from a command prompt. Make sure your gateway is correct. Glen A. Johnson

The gateway is 10.0.0.1 on all machines in the bldg.

So what does all the info on the print route mean?

Tried a different card? I had a brand new dell server I bought, and it came with a network card that was going bad. I started generating bad packets, and got worse until none of my users could log onto the domain. Once I disabled the card, everybody could get on. It may be just bad enough to work to a point, but not all the way. Glen A. Johnson

Well, heres the thing. There was an onboard nic slot. It wasn't working at all. So i installed this one. I disabled the other one.

If I may rudely butt in :), Glen was right. You're not running DNS, or at least, you don't have DNS configured on this client. W2K will have all sorts of problems finding network resources without properly configured DNS. Now, what kind of "network" are you running? NT4 domain, 2K domain, no domain....?

It's just a real quick way to check some of your settings. The first gateway to show up should be your gateway on the network. The interface is the ip address of the pc. Just faster than trying to open network and dial up connections, going to tcp/ip and checking the settings there. Not knowing your complete setup a quick glance looks good. I'm not an expert at this subject either, but it's worth learning. Still think I'd try a different card. Glen A. Johnson

No domain..just peer to peer. The learning curve on win2k server setting up all the goodies is pretty steep. I havn't had all the schooling although i am on my way to get certified. None-the-less, i am trying to get this to work because it is what it is, and I am where I am. So far i've not had any problems at all with the network in general; print sharing, file sharing, databases..etc, etc.

What to do...what to do...

Then I'll assume that when you say the 2K machine can't see the network, you mean that when you open Network Neighborhood, you're not getting any resources, correct? In this case, you're really relying on broadcasts to create network "connectivity". You can do a few things to help old W2K out. First enable NetBios over TCP/IP. Second, consider using the HOSTS and LMHOSTS files to aid in name resolution since you're not using WINS/DNS. Lastly, make sure that W2k is set to the same workgroup name as your other machines (I'm sure you've done this)....

I'll give it a shot and see what i can do. Thanks folks!

Okay...It turns out that i did have NetBios over TCP/IP enabled AND LMHOSTS lookup enabled as well... Not what? lol, i am going to put yet another NIC card in and see what i can see but any other advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

This may sound very stupid and way off base.. but did you have file and printer sharing installed on the computer. i had a win2k computer fresh from Dell ( not a sales pitch :)) that i couldnt get to see the network for anything .. i installed file and printer sharing and bingo.. worked like a charm..

Good luck!

hmm.. i'll have to give that a shot.. thanks.. (it'll have to wait till tomorrow tho at work)
