Hardware Upgrade and now XP Pro will not boot

Help I recently upgraded my computer from a AMD athlon to an Intel chip I decided to keep my same 40gig HD to save from reloading all my programs however the computer will not boot to the new hardware but the drive still boots to the old hardware. I even booted the new hardware with a win98 load that i had to make sure none of the hardware was bad and it booted just fine so it must be an XP problem????

No - it's a driver problem. Presumably you changed not only the CPU, but the motherboard as well. If you think about it, you've just put a whole heap of different hardware in your machine.

Best thing to do is a fresh rebuild. Sorry, but that's the way it is with that kind of upgrade.

The alternative (which does work, but is a bit of a pain), is to put the old board and CPU back in, de-install ALL the motherboard and system devices - not forgetting disk controllers and any other on-board stuff like LAN cards, sound, whatever is on your old motherboard.

Then put the new board and chip in, boot up, and go through "Windows has found new hardware" about 100 times. Update ALL those drivers with the latest from the manufacturer's website, and you should be in reasonable shape.

A fresh rebuild is better, IMO - this isn't an Apple MAC!

I'm not too sure about this, but i think Windows XP might have some kind of protection over major hardware changes, MAYBE. When you installed XP, it checks your current processor, motherboad, etc before the install. Now that you have changed the processor and the motherboard I think XP might have trouble recognising all this new hardware, because when it refers to its system configuration, the hardware specs are different. You might want to try, if possible, to boot it up in Safe Mode and re-install all the new hardware. In safe mode, you can try going to the Device Manager section and remove all the old hardware settings. After a reboot XP should then be able to detect the new hardware automatically. If you can't boot it up at all, you might want to try using the "Repair" function available within XP. Insert the XP CD and you should be able to get that option. This should definitely work because what it does is re-install the OS system files. If that still doesn't work, as a last resort, i suggest you do a fresh install.

XP is very tempremental especially when you change your mobo and processor! Every board and pro has an individual code and xp looks for that code when it boots so new mobo and porocessor = new codes and no boot. reformat and you will be alright

i can tell u windows doesnt have protection against major hardware changes i upgraded my epox/celeron to a asus/amd and had no probs booted first time and found new hardware.

Unless you're using a corporate key or one of those hacked copies of XP out there, it's going to hassle you.

Also, I am yet to see a motherboard change that does not result in XP crashing upon startup. Even Win2000 wasn't happy with a motherboard change.

Are you getting any error messages when you try to boot?
STOP 0x0000007B by any chance?
