While attempting to clean install Win 2000 on a computer previously running 98 with no problems, I get a "Hardware Failure Contact your Hardware vendor" error during setup(detection).
I tried 3 times, re-formatting each time. The 3rd time, I removed unneccessary components(modem, network card) and still got the error at the exact same spot.
4th time, I decided to install 98 to see if it would work. It worked fine.
Computer details...
MSI K7T Pro 2-A MOBO with 900mhz AMD processor. 20G HD(not sure of brand).

Can someone give me a clue why WIN2000 produced this hardware error?

If you have APIC enabled in bios , try an install
with apic disabled .

Thanks for the replies.
I looked in the BIOS and couldnt find APIC.

I put the Win2k disc in and started to upgrade from 98, which gives an upgrade report listing compatibility issues.
There were 3 items on the report...
PCI Multimedia AUdio Device
SOund Blaster Pro
and this one
Plug and Play Bios(fail safe)
Does this mean my MOBO is not compatible or just the bios? BTW I couldnt find the MOBO in the compatibility list.

- Advanced chipset features -
Disable onchip USB
Disable onchip Sound
Disable onchip Modem

- Integrated Peripherals -
Disable onboard legacy audio

- PnP/PCI Configuration Setup -
PnP OS Installed set to YES
Reset Configuration Data Enabled

Try an install of W2K,se if it runs through .
The onboard sound stuff can be ebabled in bios later .

Ok, Ive made changes to the BIOS as suggested. Im trying to upgrade now, I'll get back as things develop.

PS-I WAS able to find the MOBO in the compatibility list, I was searching for the wrong number, should be MS-6330

Ok, things are going well. Win2k is installed. I started turning the BIOS options back on one at a time and so far so good. One audio component gave me a little problem but I was able to work it out.
Should these BIOS options be changed back to original settings also? RCD was originally set to disabled

- PnP/PCI Configuration Setup -
PnP OS Installed set to YES
Reset Configuration Data Enabled

-PNP os should be YES.
This gives W2K control of IRQ settings.
-Reset configuration = YES is only active one time at boot,
use this for troubleshooting if devices has irq conflicts etc. during install of devices.

Congratulations ....
