What ever happened to a OS just booting up and thats it?

I have XP, it boots up and the hard drive will going crazy for a good 5-8 minutes. Which causes the system to be slow and you have to wait to load anything.

- Computer is 1.40 GHz - 512 of RAM
- I disabled virus scan
- Defrag is not running
- Nothing is in the startup folder
- No other security software / scanning software is loaded

Is there a way to see exactly what is cause the hard drive to be acting like it is.
How do I find out what programs are causing this to happen?

Thanks for any help!!!

sounds to me that your harddrive needs replacing if your hear loud noices within the hard drive when youre booting up thats it,

try making an xp boot disk and

scan your hard drive for errors and bad sectors

hope that helps

Have a look at the Indexing Service, in fact have a look at any unnecessary services you are running.

See if you can locate the Bootvis tool from Microsoft to improve your boot times.
