Hi all.

My Pentium 2 - 466 with Win98 has one annoying feature:

Even when I'm not using it, the hard drive always seems to be accessing or writing data. The only way to stop it is to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the task manager.

As soon as that window is closed, it resumes its noise.

I am certain that this is NOT a fan or other mechanical noise.

I do have cable internet, but there is a wired router with the firewall enabled at all times.

Any thoughts?

Have you scanned for spyware and viruses? Start with spyware, its more common on 98 these days. search for ad-aware. Install, update and scan. When done, go back and get pest patrol. This is a trial only, but always finds stuff ad-aware misses.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

if it's a scsi hard drive, no wonder it won't stop spinning. that's how they work.

Go to Control Panel and turn off "Fast Find". With a system as slow as this, "Fast Find" continously indexes your hard drive. If you're really brave, remove the hard drive and set it on an insulated surface (cardboard box). Hook everything up and start the computer. It may be as simple as the case is slightly warped and vibrating with the hard drive, or the hard drive itself going bad! At least this will tell you if it IS the hard drive making the noise.
