Hard Drive moved to another PC & returned

A user moved the hard drive to a different computer now XP will not boot. Message says unable to find device 0. How can I access the contents of this drive without building another partition?

Make sure the drive is plugged into the master IDE cable. Set the jumper to cable select, then boot it up. It should find that drive pretty quick.

If not, I say throw it in a different computer as a slave drive and you'll be able to search it as a E: or whatever.

I've checked jumpers & cable even used different cable. Last resort will now be setting it up as a slave...

Because of hardware differences between the original PC and the "new" one, it is unrealistic to expect XP to boot if moved. The chances of this working successfully are very small.

The title of your thread is "Hard Drive moved to another PC & returned".

What does the "returned" mean, or can you finish the sentence?

Is it returned an error, or returned to original machine?

After realizing the error I returned the hard drive to the original machine. Even after returning it to the original computer the same error appeared. I have even tried to set it up as a secondary drive to no avail.

What happens when you set it up as a slave drive?

Does the computer boot off of the master drive, or not at all?

Same error appears "unable to locate drive 0", even when jumpered as a slave.Somehow it overrides the master.

Most likely that is an indication that the drive's electronics are toast and are locking up the IDE bus...

I simulated same scenerio with another drive, XP resulted in same errors. I even tried to load Xp or 2000 with existing NTFS to no avail. I ended up reformatting & reloading XP. Unfortunately I lost all the data. I will probably hold on to this drive until someone comes out with utility or something to break Microsoft's trick...
