I have a problem with a client's PC that I can't solve; hopefully someone here has come across it. Put simply, at a resolution of 800x600, any hard drive access causes the display to "wobble", so much so that it is impossible to use the computer as it makes your eyes water! No hard drive access = no wobble. Bump up the resolution to 1024 makes the problem completely go away - but the client wants the 800 res.
This started because I was tasked with installing 512mb RAM and bringing the Win98SE OS upto date with all current fixes. I also installed the latest versions of Norton AV and Firewall. I did this back at my office by installing a Netgear NIC and hooking up a Iiyama LCD monitor (their monitor is a Tiny 17" 7S730) and patching into my network.
The problem did not manifest itself until I returned it to the client and reattached their monitor. The mainboard is a MSI815, which uses the Intel 82815 integrated graphics controller. I have d/l the latest drivers for this from Intel. I have also tried a different monitor driver (Win98 auto detects a "Plug & Play Monitor"
, but I have also tried a generic 17" driver. No dice. I should add that this problem was not there before I took the PC back to my office.
So, what could cause a wobble at 800, but not at any other resolution?
And yes, I've tried to counsel the client to go with 1024, but they insist on staying with 800. At the moment, I'm left with installing a new graphics card for them, but obviously I want to avoid that!
Cheers
Andrew
