When Turning on My Compaq Win-98se computer it started hanging up. I tried to install a modem dialer but later deleted it as it wasn't workin as needed. I called the Company and they said it could not have caused the problem. I get the following mesage every time it's started. I can hit enter and it will then finish bringing up windows after a consider length of time.
This is what comes up on the screen -> Cannot find a device file that maybe needed to run windows or a Windows application.
The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but thew device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
MFR.EXE
Press a key to continue.

?? Is there any way to find out what the <MFR.EXE> device file goes with. What might use this file.?
Thanks for any help. Vic.

Go to start, run, then type msconfig and hit enter. Go through on that list and find its application there and uncheck the box beside it. Hit apply and ok and restart and you should not be prompted for it again.

I forgot to mention after you get msconfig (system configuration utility window up) click the startup tab. There you will see items listed. Just find the one that refers to that program or file and uncheck it. If your not sure what they are look them up on google or post them on here and I or someone else will tell you. Hope this helps.

vicsvw,
Re-install the modem software.
Reboot the PC.
Go to Add/Remove Programs and un-install the modem software.

And you have the possibility of a bootlog boot to help you find things.
Even though it slows things down I advise setting up the menu to bootlog every time.
