We have a server that was loaded as a pdc but demoted it to a workstation to avoid conflics but now have problems with some others on the network have problems getting to the shared folders on it. Am I stuck with having to reload the o.s. and all its application's or is there a way around that?

Once a domain controller, always a domain controller. There are 3rd party utilities to promote or demote NT machines to/from one mode to another, but my experiences with these have all been unequivocally negative.

If the machine was installed as a PDC it means it thinks it is running security for its own domain. Even if the domain name is identical to your existing domain (assuming you even have one), the SID will be inconsistent and the SAM will not be shared causing users to be denied access.

If the machine thinks it is a DC and was not originally installed as a BDC to the current domain, reinstallation is the only way to be certain to straighten out the problem.

Please Re-install, it will save time and problems ...
Aastuce.

Thanks for the advice, I kind of new the answer but don't want to fess up to having to rebuild it.
