A Dell GX270 has a PCI modem add to it. It has worked fine for the past year. Yesterday, it lost the modem. I reinstalled the driver, ran anti-virus, check registory. This computer is not connected to the internet. I send data once a week via modem.

After the driver reinstall the computer sees the modem in the device manager, but he modem will not work. I ran the query test and it say that COM3 is missing. I look under the ports and there is a COM1 & LTP1.

What should I do next????

Try a different COM port.
If no luck, then the modem may be bad.

Had any storms lately? I've lost more modems to lightning than I can count.

Yeah, I agree with LawnBoy. A surge suppressor for your modem might be a good idea (they come integrated into those large electrical surge suppressors that everybody should have).

Of course at this point it might be too late...

Good luck

Might be time to cull the information regarding the modem from the system, do a reboot to a no modem state, then power down and physically reinstall the modem.
If no joy there you can syspect that the modem is surely bad.
And be aware that you can lose modem connectivity and still have the device mananger think it is OK.

Try setting the modem to a different COM port. When I deleted my modem, it came back as COM7. I think a Windows Update killed it.

Also, try diabling "Wait for Dialtone". That stopped me from faxing out a few months ago. It had worked for years.

I was able to find the same modem in a different computer. Swap them out and the new modem worked fine. The old one did not work in I placed it into the new computer. It is under warranty and I should a new one from Dell today. Thank for everyones help.
