Guys, when I use BEAUTIFY on one of my prg files I keep getting this error:

API call caused an exception

It is a large prg, but not larger than some others it does work on. Any ideas.

It may require a re-install of VFP.

Maybe there's a corruption issue? What happens if you copy-paste the text of the prg into another prg and run BEAUTIFY?

Guys, I did some research. There are apparently a number of problems with BEAUTIFY and certain text commands prior to the 8.0 upgrade. I am going to upgrade to 8.0 ASAP and will report back.

Frank,

Can you provide any more information on that? Have you got a URL you can post?

The reason I ask is that, when I first say your message, I tried to find out if there were any problems with BEAUTIFY, but couldn't find anything.

Mike

I did a keyword search (api exception error) on the forum, and this issue has come up before. Upgrading to 8.0 apparently solved a number of beautify problems.

Just as an information, I have been developing with VFP7.0 (SP1) since it came out and never encountered this problem, so I would guess that there is something else at play in the Windows settings that are set differently than my computer.

my guess would be that some kind of dll hell is at play here. not knowing exactly which of Window's API functions are being called internally by the Beautify command I would just let Window's check all of the system dlls...

Go to Start - Run ...and in the Run dialog of Windows type the following "sfc.exe /scannow" without the quotes obviously. Then sit back and relax for a bit as Windows runs the System File Check. It may be necessary for you to have your Window's installation CD handy as this runs, it will more than likely ask for it.

If there are any version problems this should find it and may fix your problem, if the problem is with the VFP install as suggested earlier then a reinstall of VFP is probably your only option for an error such as this.

The forum information quoted a number of conditions that seemed to cause BEAUTIFY to fail. Nearly all were in my file (check the forum to see all the named problems). But, Visual 8 seemed to handle all the conditions. I'll buy one after the start of the year and see ;-D
