GroupWise 6.5 and Outlook 2003

How can I get Outlook 2003 to work with GroupWise 6.5?

I beleive the most current Outlook plugin is for GW 5.5.x. And that was for Outlook 97,98, and 2000 only. To my knowledge neither Microsoft or novell have developed a plugin for GW 6.x.x and Outlook 2003. Probably the best bet is looking for a third-party solution. The plugin that Novell developed for GroupWise 5.5/Outlook 97,98,2003 intergration was not all that good, in my opinion. I would look @ places like Advansys to see if they have a solution for you. You can use outlook as your mail client instead of the Groupwise client, but you have to configure it to use POP3. No plugins are required. In your Outlook, in the mail account settings, you jsut set the inbound and outbound mail server to whatever your mail server is. Of course you're going to miss out on a lot of the features that make GroupWise great.

For setting the Groupwise system up to do POP, there is a setting in Console One for on the GWIA object properties for enabling or disabling POP.

I would also recommend reading this TID to ensure that your system is secure against spammers using your server to launch spam.

Two thoughts to add:
1- Using outlook as a client negates the security advantages and many of the productivity & management advantages of Groupwise. IMHO you need to really ask "why" it's important to set up this way.

2 - (For Marvin) Why would you choose POP3 instead of IMAP? IMAP preserves foldering

One caveat: if you're on 6.5 SP1 you'll need the FSF GWIA as there is an IMAP abend (I found out the hard way!)

Personally, I agree that using Outlook as a frontend is not the best thing to do. But I also have clients that insist on it even though the Groupwise Client gives them much more security and features. I think it's an "Ignorance is bliss" type thing. And they resist change.

About the IMAP thing, I've never set it up with IMAP before. So it was a suggestion based on what I knew would work. But does using IMAP really give them that much more when they've already chose to miss out on all the features by using Outlook in the first place?

IMAP or IMAP-S is a nice way to go. I use it myself (though not with a GW server) and having access to folders is good, if you use folders for your mail.

But "ITsmyfault" is right- The main reason for using Groupwise at all is the calendar and other functions. Without that, you might as well use a simple e-mail server
