Group main report by field in sub-report 2

Is is possible to group and sort the main report by a field only available on the sub-report? If so, what's the trick?

No, a subreport fires after the main report, so it couldn't know where to start.

It sounds like you have the design backwards, the subreport should be the main report.

In general try to avoid using subreports, they slow things and can almost always be avoided.

As synapsevampire says, the subreport is dependant on the main report. It can return values, using Shared Variables. But these are only available in the section after the section that calls the subreport.
