We've tried several tools for development, but since I took over I have implemented DW and now DMX as the tools of choice.

My problem is due to growing business lines more and more people are wanting to do their own maintaining/development on the webserver. So far this week I've had to restore three folders and two include files that were visible through all pages.

How does your company handle collaboration? Any tips that I'm missing? We are using the Check In/Check Out but I'm afraid that without and actual CMS I will always be fighting this battle.

Thoughts/ideas are appreciated. And if this is not the proper folder for this post please advise what is?

Hi Tread42!
1.st if ur in chanrge u can look who was the last person doing work on the site (get in their face for erros)
U could setup your system so that you are the only person that has rights to upload anything....
MM has another tool called "Contribute" that might fit your needs....also u might adjust the "user rights" to the site forlders so only you can create /delete them while others can just work within those folders....
All the best!

Thanks lebisol.

I have tried Contribute but unfortunatly it doesn't work very well with server side includes. Especially when you open a tag in one include and close in another. After several calls with MM they suggested a return for full refund.

Good idea on the server rights, I might have to implement that. My problem seems to be that I'm having to do way too much babysitting and not enough developing for my tastes.

Hi Tread42!
"My problem seems to be that I'm having to do way too much babysitting and not enough developing for my tastes"
--- hehee :) this will always be the case..or so it seems.
Too bad for the Contribute...I guess it is rel. new product and it will take a few versions to get there.

Thinking about this whole deal....perhaps u can:

- create multiple FTP accounts that can only access certain folders
-in DW FTP-access setup "map" users directly to those folders that concern them
- use concept of editable regions (it will help-somewhat- at leat give them warrinings of "Not being able to edit page parts")
- SSI is good way to go here...where u edit main pages and they just edit "includes"....
- maybe u can create a small (ASP/PHP/JSP?) upload fucntion for them so they work locally and upload through the site...Rich Text editors can be implemeneted on the pages as wel.....(this = more development for you but...)

but good part of all this is knowing the people that work with u and their "skills" in messing thing up

Anyhow, these are the things that came to my mind...I hope they can help further your thinking...
Good Luck!

Hi,
I'm not sure this will help but I have used a very useful little prog which will allow people to edit certain files/folders I specify as well as limit what they can or can't do - change source etc. the proggy I used was editwrx.

denis...this entire program can be repleaced with a few PHP/ASP pages with RichTextEditor
