I am in the process of a DMARK move and I was wondering about Loop Start as opposed to Ground Start Trunks. Qwest is wanting to know if the trunks that are currently Ground start need to remain that way or if they can all be converted to loop start. I have a G3si and the trunk cards are TN747's. Is there any reason why I would need my trunks to be Ground Start? If they do change them to Loop Start, do I need to make some kind of change in my switch? Is there a way to look in the switch and see what a trunk is currently set to? I am a little bit of a novice when comes to this facet of telecom. Thanks TJ

Do a display trunk and you will see an option for trunk type on page 1. It should be ground-start now. You can change it to loop-start if you want. The programming will need to be coordinated with the CO, otherwise calls will not process.

There used to be lots of supervision and use reasons for Ground vs. loop, as well as other vendors stealing loop start trunks, but I have not seen that in a while. Others may have some better reasons to stay ground, but I personally would not have any issues changing.

Just my $.02.

So if I change the trunk to loop start in the Definity and instruct the carrier when they bring in the trunk to change it to loop start, that's all I have to do?

One reason that comes to mind to stay with ground-start is glare. This is where an incoming call and an outgoing call access the trunk at the same time. Loop-start trunks have no supervision and therefore exhibit the glare problem more often than ground-start.

There is a really good reason to keep ground start, especially with Quest. My experience with them is that loop start lines will not hang up when you terminate the call and all of a sudden you have no route out or in because the switch still thinks they are all being used. That was why the AT&T developed the ground start lines and still use them themselves. If it works good, don't try to fix it, especially on the older boxes.
