Graphics filter problem with office 97 on w9x boxes

Hi I am having a few problems with the graphics filters installed by office 97 on win 9x boxes. Below is an overview of my network.

Client OS: 9x
Progam: Office 97
Server: Windows 2k

When you try to open a jpg/gif file with photo editor you get an "unknown file format" error message. I have scoured the ms knowledge base and found the following article which looked promising but didn't work.

I have told users to open the pictures in Word or Internet Explorer for the meantime until I find a work around. If anyone has any ideas could you please let me know.

I had a similar problem when setting up W2K slaptops. Office 2000 was loaded Ok but jpegs generated the unknown file format error even tho' they displayed the thumbnails in the directory. I went into Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, loaded the Office 2000 CD and changed/added bits in there.

In your case have you looked at the clients Add/Remove Programs on Control Panel>Windows Set Up Tab>Accessories. You may find that not all the options for Image support are checked ...enabling them may be the solution to your problem.

I have finally fixed this problem and thought i'd post my fix for anyone else with the same. The office setup doesn't add the correct registry key. Find a healthy computer that it works on, search for the registry entry:


[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Graphics Filters]

Export that file and merge it on the computers that it doesn't work on and that should work.
