I wiped windows before i made a recovery cd... i didn't get a windows xp home edition cd with the comp, so i can't reinstall it! I just got a microsoft works 8.5 one.

I'm lost!!! I need to fix it before i go back to uni... but cleary i'm crap with computers!! help!!

When i turn the comp on it brings up a black screen n the main points im getting are; PXE-E61 media test failure, check cable.... & PXE-M0F Exiting PXE ROM. Operating system not found!!! Its a lil bit worrying!!

Doesn't give safe mode option or anything..

please help!!

The PXE messages simply mean the the laptop is trying to boot from the network adapter and finding no cable attached. It is trying to boot from your network adapter because it can't boot from the hard drive. Check the boot order in BIOS to confirm this.

Not knowing what you mean by wiped windows, I suspect you've formatted the drive. If you have no CD to reinstall the OS, I am unsure what you think we here can do to help.

You may have accidentally changed the boot device order in the BIOS. Try holding the <del> key down or the <F2> key when you switch the power on to get into BIOS configuration. The hard drive should be the first device.

If you did not get a CD-ROM with windows on it and you have not bought an illegal (pirated) version - even innocently, then look for an option as the machine powers up that indicates - 'press (some key) to recover operating system)'. The actual phrase varies.

Without knowing any more about the machine or your circumstances it is hard to offer any further advice. You may be forced to buy a retail version of XP Home.

You may have scrambled the Bios, follow "stduc's" advise and see if you can set your Bios to the Safe Defaults.

what is "stduc's" advise???????????????????????

Can't you see this above?

On reflection. I think it is possible you also messed up the hard drive. I just recalled this happened to me once when I removed a laptop from its docking station & the battery was dead. The laptop died. Once replaced in the docking station it would not boot. A attempt at a repair using the XP-CD failed. The HDD was fixed by using Spinrite from Spinrite found a bad sector but failed to recover the data it contained. After using Spinrite however the laptop booted and XP gave an error message about a missing DLL. I was able to recover that easily from the XP installation CD though.

So, if my BIOS suggestions fail, download Spinrite & try that - it is not expensive.

If a "PXE..." error is displayed when you start the computer, it indicates that the computer is attempting to boot from a network (LAN), but is not able to find a remote boot server. If this happens repeatedly, and you are not deliberately trying to boot from a network server, change the boot priority in BIOS Setup to make 'LAN' the last entry in the list of boot devices.
