Got A Registry Fix For Standby?? 1

when i first loaded XP Pro SP2, the standby function by itself powered the computer down - not hibernate, just Standby. Since then it's changed, some time ago and I don't know exactly when or what happened, but all it does now is shut off the monitor and leave the machine running - not much of a help !
Does anyone know what I need to change, probably in the Registry, for Standby to function as it did initially and power down? (I don't just want to go to Hibernate ...)

Any thoughts most welcome, thx

See what is available with Powercfg, I'm not sure myself whether you can do much with it and Standby having never tried it.

i've run through most of the references, linney, and no joy yet - but one surpsing thing. when i Run powercfg.cpl, and open Power Options Properties, under the Power Schemes drop-down menu there is nothing there - it is BLANK !!
Now, i have more questions than answers, but i know THAT'S not right. and it might relate to my issue. thoughts?

i do keep hoping someone will stop by with a reg fix for this problem ...

I once had this too, no more profiles under power schemes. I had to do a system restore to a prior date...

but oh my Lord, i have no idea how far back i'd have to go! (and system restore fails more often than it succeeds, in my own experience - haven't had great luck with it).

Some other options.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

so much to follow up on - thx for your time and help.
i'd wondered about Repair ... but i think i've done that before, without getting standby back.
i do keep thinking it's a Reg fix, primarily ...

anyway, i'll let you know how it turns out.

If you have some spare hard drive capacity you could try a parallel install of XP and see if your Standby functions correctly. This might tell you whether your current install is damaged or some other reason is the actual cause.

well, SOMETHING happened. i have NO idea what. but it's working properly now. the only thing i did was install the original drivers for my SOUND card (Audigy 2 ZS), and go to the registry to look at the power management settings (but i didn't change them). i don't think that's what changed things, but something did - it now powers down on Standby, so i immediately exported my registry to a file.

Thx for all your advice. Wish i could report what corrected the settings so that other readers might be helped.
