if your interested in buying a book, there is an excellent one called "PHP and MySQL Web Development" it takes you through every little step, including setting up the server, how to query with MySQL, even some programming basics. i believe the more advanced examples are doing a shopping cart and web-based email. i have to admit, once i got going i never use the book anymore but i it definitely made getting started easier. what we see depends mainly on what we're looking for.
