Good day.

Audio related question.

I had a perfect working computer with Windows XP Pro. I've tried installing a Logitech USB camera into my computer. Somehow, after a reboot, i lost my CDROM, and audio driver so i had to reinstall them. Got rid of all exclamation marks in Device Manager and windows states my audio is working well BUT i hear no sound. There is no speaker icon in the task bar. I checked "Sounds and Multimedia" in Control Panel and it says "No Audio". I tried reinstalling drivers for sound again, but no results. I plugged another sound card just to experiment. No sound either eventhough windows says drivers are there and evething is working(NO Audio devic- in Control Panel). Is there a way of getting my sound back?

I guess something got screwed int the registry. I really am trying to avoid the windows reinstall since i have some programs that i really would like to keep.

I have a second drive in a drive cage that I can slip in and install WinXP on within a couple of days.

I can fully take over that disk and install the OS and SP2.

The sound will work then. I know it will.

But, will it help me fix the problem in the orginal install? Sound used to work until I plugged in the
MS Digital Sound System 80. Then not since.

I will try that on the isolated system. When I get some time.

Can you clarify this. Are you attempting to get "MS Digital Sound System 80" to work on your system, or are you attempting to get sound to work after removing "MS Digital Sound System 80" from your installation?

These are old articles but they may give a few clues. Is "MS Digital Sound System 80" compatible with XP, what is its link with USB, how are the USB side of things on your computer?

Are there any conflicts in Device Manager?

Computer Does Not Start with Digital Sound System 80 Speakers

I want to eventually get MS Digital Sound System 80 working with this system. It is listed as "Compatible" in the Windows XP Hardware compatiblility listing from MS.

I would hope that I could switch from USB digital out to onboard soundcard analog output without too much fuss.

I have no conflicts noted anywhere in the system, with or without the MSDSS80 plugged in.

With it plugged in, I still cannot get to the volume controls, which is where this mess started.

I miss my sounds!
Just plugging this thing in switches settings somewhere and now I have no sounds and WMP will not play a CD!

Grrrrrrrrr.

Got a fresh install of XP up last night, and had great success.

With this install, I setup the onboard sound using the drivers supplied with my motherboard. All working OK.

Plugged in the MS Digital Sound System to the USB. Got the confirmation that it was working, and the sound switched to the USB speaker system. Without even a reboot!

Unplugged the USB speaker system, exited Windows Media Player and restarted it. Sound back to the onboard sound outputs. No problems with any of it.

I can adjust the volumes of all the sources. No conflicts.

I suspect that the driver disk supplied with the MS digital sound system is what mangled my existing setup.

Any hope that I can unscramble it? Would a listing of the files installed help. I would like to not rebuild my XP system.

Alright, this might be worth a try.

Download RegMon:
Start Regmon in your parallel install of XP (the new one that works) and redo the steps that screwed up the original install.

As you already know the filenames, all you need to figure out is the registry changes, and RegMon will let you see them.

Print out the RegMon results, go to your original installation of XP and:

. Delete all the files the USB speaker system installed. You should use the Search feature to make sure you get all instances.

. Use regedit to delete/change the registry entries involved.
