Hi guys,

Got a motherboard query if anyone can help me out.?

OK, I'm using a Gigabyte GA-7DX (rev 4.3) and I've recently upgraded the CPU from an XP1600 to an XP2200.

Apparently the XP2200 CPU is the top chip I can use with this mobo with the BIOS upgraded to F7 (which I already have). Currently the XP2200 is only being recognised as an 1800 and I have all the bus settings/dip switches configured correctly.

I have the CPU Host/PCI Clock in the BIOS set at DEFAULT so surely with the BIOS already flashed, the system should auto recognise this chip.??

Can anyone shed any light on this.

ThanX.!

AMD developed something called the P Rating. This enabled users to compare their chips with Intel chips mainly. For exmple an XP2200 actually only runs at around 1800, which is why this shows in your comp. It is called an XP2200 as it "supposedly" compares to the Intel chips of this speed, eg Pentium 4.

I'm sure someone will explain this better for you, I'm in a rush! :)

Howdy:

The XP2200 is simply a model number NOT the processor speed.. The speed you are recording is correct..

As per AMD:

Q: What do the 1800+, 1700+, 1600+, and 1500+ numbers mean?

A: These are model numbers. AMD will identify the AMD Athlon XP processor using model numbers, as opposed to megahertz, and is introducing 1800+, 1700+, 1600+ and 1500+ versions. Model numbers are designed to communicate the relative application performance among the various AMD Athlon XP processors, as well as communicate the architectural superiority over existing AMD Athlon processors. The AMD Athlon XP processor 1800+ will outperform an Intel Pentium® 4 processor operating at 1.8GHz on a broad array of end-user applications.

AMD Athlon XP processor 1800+ operates at a frequency of 1.53GHz.
AMD Athlon XP processor 1700+ operates at a frequency of 1.47GHz.
AMD Athlon XP processor 1600+ operates at a frequency of 1.40GHz.
AMD Athlon XP processor 1500+ operates at a frequency of 1.33GHz.

Surely if dazzaboy is already an AMD XP1600+ user he is aware of AMD's numbering system?

Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Thanks for the info guys.

I am aware of the XP numbering system but cheers anyway.)

Turns out that SESaskDFC may have struck a point there tho. The opening CMOS screen should show the actual CPU name ie. AMD Athlon XP1600+ etc, but the machine is stating that the XP2200 is 'Unknown CPU type @ 1.8ghz which techinally correct. The XP2200 is clocked at 1800mhz.

I've also emailed Gigabyte customer support to see if they have any answers.

3D Mark 2001 is recognising the new chip as a Thoroughbred @ 1.8ghz and recognising all the chip features ie Extended 3D now! etc and I'm getting an extra 800 3D marks too over the XP1600, so looks like all will be ok.

Cheers,
