We are just about to install a new fibre optic link to out new building,we plan to convert the main building over to gigabit for the servers, using copper cable,i see places selling gigabit media converters, called 1000 Base SL to 10/100/1000TX. Will these converters allow us to connect the fibre to a 10/100 OR Gigabit switch? The plan was to make the new fibre link future proof but the upgrade would be in stages.Stage 1 is to install the fibre terminated with SC connectors and use two of these converters to connect to each buildings 10/100 switch.Stage 2 was to replace the 10/100 switches with Gigabit copper switches but still using the media converters, thus having Gigabit link from building to building AND to the servers.Does this make sense?! The fibre will have SC connectors, will this conect OK to the media converters ?(1000Base SL whatever that is?!) Does this sound OK?? Thanks........

you sound like you are on track from where I sit

1000baseSX is a short range protocol (200 to 500 meters, depending on the fiber, if you have not laid it, you want 50/125 nanometer multimode)

1000baseLX is a long range protocol (550 meters in multimode, 2km in singlemode fiber)

these guy have the converters you want

Hi,thanks for the reply, you have backed up what i thought! My only query was with the Fibre and connectors,I'm assuming that SC connectors are compatible with gigabit?(that there is no specific connector for gigabit?) The preferede fibre over here seems to have switched to 62.5 nanometer,i understand 50 is better for gigabit, the price seems the same! So what's the point of 62.5?! Thanks for your knowledge ;) ps,the media converters i was looking at state they are compatible with 1000Base SL/LX,is this typo or is there an SL protocol?(or do they mean SX!!)

SC is fine with gigabit, 62.5 was good for 100 meg, it allowed looser tolerences, but 50 is able to travel farther at gig speeds.

there is no SL standard that I am aware of, SX is cheaper than LX if the distances allow it.

I was not able to get the converters you showed to state they would be good for 10/100/1000 copper. The ones I showed you were designed for just the sort of expansion and growth you planned
