Experienced ..\config\system32\system file missing or corrupt, press 'r' for repair, which was an endless boot loop. Could not get into safe mode as well. Same result. Decided to reformat and clean install using the OEM CD. As soon as formatting began, an error popped up that Norton Ghost couldn't read a file and the process stopped. The manufacturer (eMachines) tech support said the CD is probably bad, but it seems ok. First question, is Ghost preventing the format? If so, how can you shut it off? Don't even know what it is or why it's there.

To make matters worse, another copy of XP Pro was used to clean install to get the PC running. Worked fine. Still have the Ghost problem with the OEM CD. I know activation time is looming and would like to use the OEM key. Should I make the MicroSoft phone call and tell them what happened or is there another way around this?

No, you should get the OEM CD replaced by the supplier.
