I know this is a strange question. But I would like to learn SQL Server where I work when it is slow. Management doesn't mind if you use the computer for personal stuff when it's slow but they have software installed on the computer that wipes out anything anyone has put on it whenever the computer, which is shared, is restarted. So the other day I downloaded SQL Server Express and it told me to restart the computer to use it. Of course, when you restart the computer, it wipes out the SQL Server. Is there any way around this? I could buy a laptop and bring it to work but I was just wondering if anybody knew of a way.

Probably best to comply with their policies regardless. If you're wanting to learn SQL syntax more than SQL Server Administration, you can try websites such as SQLCourse.com which has tutorials and functionality for you to type SQL to work with their exercises.

It's not a question of policy. They don't forbid putting software on the computer within reason. The problems is if you restart the computer like it tells you after you install it, then it's gone.

Can you talk with the Admins and ask permission to install SQL Server on your computer?

They may have an ability to turn this software off or log into your PC with Admin rights to install it.
