Installing Digital UNIX 5.1a on an Alphaserver 1200.

Lost an undetermined amount of files under the / (root) partition by using 'rm /'. System no longer bootable. There are no backups. I tried to reload 5.1a from CDROM and after selecting the Language for the OS it fails to find the hard drives and I have no choice but to exit the install. What do I need to do in order for the installation to see the drives then continue the install? Seems I need to do something from the >> prompt in order to continue.

Thanks for any help,
Eddie

From >>> prompt, do command
>>>show dev
Is your harddisk shown there such as
dka0. ... -> CDROM
dkc1. ... -> Harddisk
dkc3. ... -> Also harddisk
etc
You devices should be listed
If not, may be you interface or cable is damaged

If shown, then start from reinstallation the system.

what command are you using to boot from the install media ?

>> boot dka500.

Concerning the first reply. It is seeing the hard disks
using >> show device

Sorry for giving so little info. I've used Sun and IBM for many years and are very familiar with those. Digital Unix I'm not too familiar with.

Eddie

what exact error are you getting during the install ?

After selecting the Language for OS a dialog box pops up with a whole paragraph of information about not seeing any disk drives, hit OK. After hitting OK it kicks me out to a
# prompt for me to restart the install after fixing the problem. At this point I believe I can define the drives and partitions in order to see it next time I boot to CDROM but I'm not sure how to do that.

Here is my situation today. I do not have the Alpha system
where I'm located and is in the hands of someone else so I can't continue to troubleshoot. I'm sure I will get involved later when the other person calls me. If any of you can guess where I need to go from here, please let me know. Thanks for you help with this. Eddie

I will probably replay in the very near future with more information of this problem.

I've seen this before, try specifying a different boot disk.

Mike
