I have been asked how to get a dial tone from the nortel PBX from an outside line?

The user wants to call in from an outside line then be able to access the nortel's dial tone to access test lines. my recommendation is to install a soft phone, but the person wants to be able to do this from any phone.

thanks

LOL. That user just wants to make free calls. You can give him full access to your lines, and at your expense, by building a DISA number in LD24. You might as well post the number and password on the Internet for everyone else to use too.

The problem with this request is that it opens you up for fraud. We've had requests like this from supposed carriers, and it's actually people calling in and looking to make long distance or international calls on your dime.

My suggestion: DON'T DO IT!!!

There is no reason any carrier would ask this of you, I would get as much information as possible on who the requestor is and turn it over to your local or LD carrier fraud unit or security.

thanks for the info.

FYI... the same goes if someone calls in and asks to be transferred to extension 900 or 9000. This is a fraud scheme to get someone to transfer the caller to an international operator where they again make calls on your dime.

There are tons of threads about PBX security and fraud schemes. It's always good to check them out to make sure your system is not vulnerable.

You may also want to make sure your security checks are in place for your voice mail system. Calling through voicemail is a regular back door that people sometimes forget to close.

so basically, in LD 24, a DN is created to dial into with a password. then a specific route is preprogrammed? or you can give the setup unlimited access and allow whoever calling in access to dial specific routes directly?

thanks

You create assign a DID/DDI DN in LD24. While building it, you have the choice of password, NCOS, etc. Then when it is called from the outside, it's just as if they lifted the handset of a phone inside your building....it answers with internal dial tone.

The only valid test that can be performed with DISA is proving how inept a customer can be.

just to clarify, the testing isnt for the PBX it is for equipment connected to the pbx. there are routes setup to access this equipment. that is the access the users are looking for.

thanks
