Could someone please tell me what program to use to get some old casette tapes into Windows XP or even Windows 98 as an audio file and/or mp3? Thanks.

On the Start menu under Programs/Accessories/Entertainment there's something called Sound Recorder. If you connect the output of your tape deck to the input of your PC (probably called 'line in') you can use Sound Recorder to record a WAV file.

Alternatively I use a piece of freeware called Audacity (you can find it at because Sound Recorder is only barely up to the job. Audacity can record straight to MP3 if you want it to and you can also edit the recordings.

Citt1, You can use a Shareware program called Total Recorder. Works great.
