getimagesize with a gif

Hi-

Just wondering if anyone knows of or has experienced issues using getimagesize with gifs. I have it succesfully working in a script that will read jpg files find, but when trying to open a gif, getimagesize complains that it can't open the file for reading. The path is correct and the permissions are 777.

any thoughts?

I am running PHP 4.3.1 as an Apache 1.3.x module on RH 7.3. I am using version 2.x of the GD library.
