Is there any program out there that will test the maximum memory that a computer can take? SANDRA used to do this as I recall, but the newer versions don't seem to have that capacity. Thanks.

Sandra still does do this - look on the mainboard information page.

The most accurate method would be to to look the information up in the motherboards manual, downloadable, (if you havn't got one) from the manufacturers website generally as a pdf.

Honestly would you make expensive memory upgrade decisions on the strength of a software analysis, well I wouldn't.

lots of motherboards have special configuration data: for one example, I've seen particular boards that would only run certain memory speeds if all four slots were occupied and no software is going to tell you that! but the manual would.

The only problem with trusting the manual is that if you get a cheaper board, the manual may not have this information in it. It's also possible that if the manual does have the info in it that the manual is not for the same revision board that you have. For example, the manual may say that it only supports 512 MB modules, but the manual wasn't updated with the next revision of the board and it actually supports 1 GB modules (or larger). Sometimes things like that are also left out becuase the larger modules aren't available (or at least widely available) at the time the board was released.

Honestly, I would compare Sandra and the manual, and if they are in agreement then you're set. If not, then I would hit the net and see if I couldn't get a good answer. Usenet has newsgroups in the alt.comp.periphs.mainboard and alt.comp.mainboard hierarchies for most major brands, and you can usually get answers pretty quick.
