get highlighted text?

is it possible to see if text is highlighted in the browser? i don't have to have this option, but if it is possible it will make a good day.

I am trying to find a way that I can tell what text has been highlighted in a text box. I doubt this is possible, but it will make my day if it is.

ie...
If the user highlights text in a textbox, I want to be able to tell what text he/she has used his mouse to highlight, so I can alter or delete it.

Is the information in the textfield prepopulated?? Or is the information in the textfield entered by the user??
This may not be possiable, if the information is entered in the textfield by a user, but if its prepopulated then you might make it work via the use of Arrays... I have not failed; I merely found 100,000 different ways of not succeding...

IE makes use of the textrange and document.selection objects. This is very straight forward to get selected text.
