get file size prior to upload

does anyone know of a way to get the file size prior to an upload using cffile...i currently get the file size after the upload and then take appropiate actions depending on the size but the problem is by that time it is to late...i need to stop a user before the upload takes place

Although I havent tried it myself I read somewhere that you could possibly use javascript and a hidden frame - I think it was geared more towards checking images before they were uploaded by creating an image object from a form field.

Just a thought.
