when I try to run the umax scanner, I get a fatal error 06 and it locks up. this is driveing me nuts. Please help........

Hello, jawja.

Error 06 means that there is a conflict between devices. It is known that umax drivers may be incompatible with the whole win9x series up. A patch is available at umax site. Per Umax, it is because its driver(s) could be to too slow for the present speed of cpu's. You should read the Umax's faq 00049:

for how to comment out the umaxis11.386 in your system.ini to start back to normal before installing a patch which is available there too.

Certain makes of printers are known to interfere with scanners at a hardware level. Do you have a printer connected directly to your scanner, is this a usb scanner ?

I do have a printer hooked to it, but the scanner ran fine for months, till I scaned some thing and noticed it was going to print instead of file, I diddn't know how to stop it so I beleive I hit cntl, alt, del. I have done every thing I know to get it to run, deleted every thing to do with it, even down loaded new drivers and still just as soon as you click on it, it throughs up the error on blue screen and then won't respond, have to kill the power to get it out of lock up ?????????

If it is practical for you and in light of the fact that you may have accidentally deleted a vital file I would suggest moving your critical data to safe location and performing a format and reinstalling to rule out hardware failure.

Before resorting to this extreme measure I would check the printer cable and scanner-to-computer cable. Sometimes vibrations can nudge these a little bit a create havoc. I would also substitute a known good cable in both those places. If you own a second computer try a setup there also. If you need assistance in the steps to reformat please advise and I will try to help.

ps. is a precious resource for this type of operation.

good luck.
