have a pc with a DFI AM33-EL motherboard, 768 mgs of sdram, an AMD-XP 1600 processor and on board Trident video of 8 megs.board has no AGP slot so i bought a Nvidia Geforce2 MX 400 PCI card with latest Detonator drivers(41.09).also have 300 watt power supply. the problem is when trying to play Unreal Tournament or Wolfenstein the pc locks up and i have to reboot.any suggestions appreciated..

Even tho you have 768 mgs of physical sdram, you could still have a memory issue here. Just for grins (you might have tried this already- sorry to bother you if so)why not disable all unnecessary programs in the startup group using msconfig, reboot of course- and turn off as many running processes as you can if you are using Win 2000 or XP. I would start there at least.

Hello,

I had the same type of problems before. I first changed my video card which was an older one for a GeForce4 440 MX. The problems did not disappear. Then I changed the sound card, updated any driver I could find, tested any directx configuration I could set up... unsuccessfully.

Then I changed my mb and processor to a P4 system, and all problems disappeared.

So what ?

I *don't* say that amd systems *always* get trouble regarding 3d issues, but I know a few people that experienced the same as me (that is, finally changing the processor put an end to those bugs). And I also know people who never had problems with their amd systems.

The reseller of my spare parts said there were still compatibility issues with some combination of components with an amd processor, and even more frequently when the os is Windows 2000 (?)

I thought it might be usefull to inform you of this because it is frustrating to spend money on new components you maybe don't really need (as a sound card) and eventually state that the cpu was responsible.

The games you are talking about are not too fat for your video card in itself.

Hope you'll find a solution.

I don't mean to be rude but your powers of deduction are pretty crude, swopping out half your system is bound to have a significant impact on the running of the PC and you basically rubbishing AMD systems on the basis of your one good experience with Intel P4's is hardly proof of there superiority.
I know you didn't say all AMD's but you infer Intels are more stable and better in 3D.
I know lots of users who have had 3D problems with there P4's.
Intels are no better or worse for problems, take it from me, our business has custom built in excess of 1,000 machines in the last year, mixed specifications, P4's Athlon XP's etc and proportionally returns for problems are about the same for both makes. Incidently returns are over 95% software related and not hardware at all.
Only differance I can see is the people who have purchased P4 have paid more money for the same performance (more fool them)

People let's not argue and play a yes no story. We have to help cooll23 here.

Cooll23. Did you disable the onboard video ? If not then go into your bios and turn the onboard video off.

thanks folks, disabled on board video and have disabled other programs running..thanks for the input

Guys how about a little help for a p3 550mhz, pci radeon 7500, just installed. I have one game my son plays that will either lock up or shut down in the same spot. I get the Illegal Operation warning AND NWMAIN.warning. sorry for butting in on someone elses thread but we got a couple of the best involved already and my problem is simular in nature as ccoll23. thanks PEARL

ccoll23,
If you can allocate more memory to the "on-board" video, you might be better off with that than the PCI card.
