Is there any way to permit remote users to log in to windows 2000 domain via this type of VPN? We use active directory and a local domain.

Yes it works very well. Just establish the vpn connection between the appliances and make sure that you can ping between the two networks. Make sure that you add the proper entries in the host file.
I have set several of these up for clients and they work very well.
