I have a gateway system loaded with XP. The Gateway splash screen shows up on booting for about 30 seconds. Then the screen goes black for another 20-30 seconds before the log in screen comes up, sometimes longer. It takes far too long to boot up. Does anyone know how to get rid of the splash screen or know what may be causing the slow boot up? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hit escape when the splash screen starts and see the bootup process running underneath.

Usually there is a way to get rid of splash screens like IBM, Intel, etc, by finding the correct boot setting in the bios. The exact wording differs, some say quick boot and others say different. But you should be able to get rid of this in the bios.

hit TAB key on boot to see what is booting.
As I remember some of the gateways had that feature unavailable to disable their splash screen. I am not current on the latest Gateways so I would not know if they still are like that.

The IBM and Intel screens can be got rid off in bios, maybe gateway as well.

firewolfrl:

Worked on several Gateway computers, you are correct, they do give the option to enter Bios or as you say hit the Tab key to exit the Splash screen.

Yes but there is more to this than just the splash screen displaying.
Obviously something is making this PC HANG on boot.
So we need to find out what that is.
Turning off the splash screen would normally shave only a few seconds off the total boot, so something else it plainly wrong.

Yes, he can go to msconfig and see what is starting up. Usually half of whats there can be unchecked. Quick time is one prog that thinks its always needed when its not.
There are quite a few others too.

FYI, smithe has another thread going in the XP Pro forum about this - thread779-1123934

Usually when I see a long hang time at boot (before windows loads) I tend to suspect a corruption in the MBR or a corrupt MFT (NTFS). If the MFT is corrupt then your best bet is to zero the drive then format and reload windows. If the MBR is corrupt then that is easy to repair using the XP CD.
I will let others explain how to do that.

Try this first:
When the boot is done run CHKDSK /R to check and see if free space allocation is an issue. Then run CHKDSK /F.

Thank you for al the suggestions.

I agree with paparazi and firewolfrl in that there may be more going on that it takes so long to get to the log in screen.
