Game with networked XpPro and WIn2000 computers

I'm playing games (ex: starcraft) on an ethernet home network using a win2000 2.1 ghertz pc as the game initiator(server). the other station is WinXPPro 1,7 Ghertz. I'm using IPX data communication protocol. while playing the performance of the game degrades to a point where both pc freeze and we have to reboot BOTH. The delay before this happens is variable. It looks like the XP machine is the culprit and it brings down the other pc. I tried playing via TCP with same result. I used to play using 2 win2000 PCs connected together - no problem! ANy idea what can be wrong ???
