Gaining Access to Restricted Folders?

Hello all.

I had a copy of Windows go really corrupt to the point where it simply won't start. Safe mode, normal, nothing works. So I installed a second copy of Windows in hopes of being able to recover all my old files. I can access all programs and files that were placed throughout the computer, such as under "c:\program files" and so forth. This is great as 90% of what I need has already been recovered..

However, from the new copy of Windows I installed on the same computer, I can not gain access to my old folders under "c:\documents and settings". Any ideas? I have the username and password to the account, but can not even log in using safe mode under the original copy of Win XP..? I even created an account with the same username and password under the 2nd copy of Windows, but still could not gain access to My Documents and Desktop.

Will going in under an NTFS enabled DOS mode work? Is there a place to supply other passwords to my account so I can gain access? Or is this stuff actually encrypted to the point where I might actually be ** out of luck?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You will have to take ownership of the files and then grant yourself permission.

Log on as a user that has Administrative priviliges. Find the folder you need access to, right-click it and select properties. Go to the security tab and click on the Advanced button. Go to the Owner tab, select the Administrators group to take ownership, check the "Reset Owner on all subcontainers and objects", and hit apply. Hit OK, OK again, go back into properties, security, advanced, check the "Reset permissions on all child objects...". Hit OK and you should be all set to get in. Marc Creviere

FilthPig:

There is no security tab that I can see... As you can tell from this picture provided below, I'm trying to access information that was once under the username Rebs.

Another strange thing is that I can access the information under Ben and Josh, but they were not Administrators. Only Rebs was an administrator for that computer.

If this is XP home you have, you have to use Safe Mode to display the Security Tabs.

Hey dude,

I can't be certain as I don't have a copy of XP Home but on XP Pro you need to go into TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS and go to the View tab - down the bottom of the list there is an option 'Use simple file sharing(recommended)'

Uncheck this and then you will see security tab on the folder properties where you expect it.

Hope this helps. [smurf]

Hey thanks everyone! It turns out you all were right. FilthPig hit it right on the head for what I had to do, and I had to listen to hads before I could even see the security tab.

It makes me feel so much better now that I am allowed access to my own files!

P.S. hads: smurf alot?
