HI.
I found that usefull in occasions where you have the EDB files but not the original SAM.
You can restore and access using only the PRIV.EDB & PUB.EDB files on a fresh NT install.
This is of course a second choice after "normal" restore, but when needed works like a charm.
This is usefull for those small buisnesses with only one server that you get to help them after someone else has already remove the traces of the original NT4 and you find out that they also don't have a good operating system backup (but you still have the EDB files).
A short how to:
You should know the original server name - in most cases no problem here.
You should also know the exact organization and site names, if you don't, simply open DIR.EDB in notepad and search a bit and you'll find it there.
Now, install NT4, install Exch5.5, using the correct server organization and site names.
Stop Exchange services.
Delete all files from MDBDATA folder, and place the PRIV.EDB and PUB.EDB files you have instead.
Important - the DIR.EDB is NOT replaced in this scenario!
Start services, Information Store should fail with error 1011
Run "isinteg -patch"
Start Information Store service, should start now.
Follow the following article to reconstruct the directory and for more info:
XADM: Restore Exchange When Site or Organization Name Is Unknown (Q155509)
Remap users to mailboxes in Exchange Administrator and User Manager as needed to access the restored folders.
