Getting ready to setup this configuration, are there any guides on how to do this easily?

I'm pretty new to VPN, and this will be my first. I dont need high security, just connectivity really.

Setup is

Local setup,
T1/Static IP
Netgear FVL328 NAT sharing
10 PC's

Remote setup,
DSL/Dynamic IPs
Windows XP machines

any help greatly apprecited.

the key is opening ports. quoted from Which ports need to be opened for running VPN

A: PPTP VPN uses TCP Port 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE); L2TP: UDP Port 1701; IPSec: Pass protocol 50 and 51. Note: 47 is a protocol number and not TCP port. The protocol name is GRE. It'll make a big difference when configuring your firewall or router.

For more tips or information, go to >vpn setup

Thanks for the response, however my post was more specific to the FVL328 VPN Firewall. I'm guessing I wont need to open the ports if the firewall itself is handling the VPN.

Am I correct to assume this?

Where im confused is how user/pass authentication works on this VPN firewall?

h0bbit,

I wonder if you found an answer to your question. I have a Netgear FVL328 router and I want to be able to VPN into my local network using any VPN client or IPsec.

If you did find an answer to your problem, would you mind sharing it?

Thank You.

You might want to check out the thread at
It relates to the FVS318 instead of the FVL328, but I believe they are very similar in setup, as the manual for the -318 includes instructions for connecting it to a -328. Besides, they're both NetGear products that don't seem to like XP client, so they probably have similar issues LOL.

I think you'll find the thread relevant.
