Data warehousing is not dead and it is not dying. Although there have been many companies which have failed DW projects, most will find that they really do need a DW. You see, the DW feeds business analysis and research, and w/o competitive advantage in these areas, your business is walking on thin ice. Since its beginnings over a decade ago, DW has spawned Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management. It has caused changes in CRM. It became the supply source for the Balanced Scorecard (Key Performance Indicators), and serves interfaces with e-commerce and ERP applications.
Want to know the future of DW? Me too, but I bet it involves Return on Investment and the bottom line. Let's face it, business is about money. Anyone who can find a way to either cut costs or increase profits via DW will be well off. I foresee better integration of DW with ERP and ABC (Activity Based Costing) systems in the area of controlling costs. I also 4see info sharing between companies for cross-selling opportunities, both to consumers and companies. This will present the need for conformed dimensions in the areas of company (customer/vendor), consumer (customer), products and services, geography, and markets. This may also lead to more standardization in terms of measures. But remember, any company which is experiencing competitive advantage through data warehousing is quite unlikely to reveal those secrets to their competition.
We need to think outside the box to uncover those secrets.
