Further Pentium 4 Problem?

I installed Oracle 8.17 on a Pentium 4/WIN XP box following the instructions here. However, I can't keep it running. If I shut down the machine, the next time I try to restart DBA_Studio, etc., I get a no listener message.
The listener and the database services are on automatic and are started. The only thing that seems to work is a re-install. duh.

I installed onto my Celeron/Windows2K laptop and had a similar problem until a friend started and set to automatic the ClientCache service.

This service is not running on the P4 after the reinstall even when it runs ok. However I cannot start this service on the P4. I get the message:

ONSRD.EXE
Instruction at 0x77f83905 referenced memory at 0x00000000.
The memory could not be 'written'

I'm not sure this is connected to the no listener problem, but its the only difference in setups (aside from processor/OS) between the two machines that we can see.

Any ideas are appreciaated.

FWIW, I reinstalled XP with Service Pack 1 off the MSDN disks and have not added any further patches. Now Oracle can find the listener. So is there something in the patches that screws up the listener?
