Hi,

My HP printer seems to have a mind of its own. Lots of times, even when I'm not printing anything, it will make a little noise and movement.

Also, once in a while my Windows XP computer seems to make a doorbell sound for no apparent reason at all.

The scary part of it is that the same thing is happening to a client of mine. He also has Windows XP, and a Canon printer.

It doesn't interrupt our work or anything. It's just weird. Why are our computers possessed?

It is possible that the connection to your cannor printer is being dropped from time to time. This would explain the printer and the noise you can hear.

Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds

Listen to the various sounds on the sounds tab and find out what sound it is your are hearing. If it is the detect new hardware sound then try reinstalling the latest drivers for the device from the cannon website after uninstalling the previous ones.

Must be Santa?

Laser and inkjet printers make occasional sounds as they move their rollers, print heads, etc. under a programmed cycle.

But I agree with Greg that it sounds as if there is some intermittancy in the connection. If any of these are USB devices you might consider this patch:

Thanks for all your input. I think it is indeed a "new hardware" sound. Unfortunately, though, I have already used the latest driver downloaded from Canon since he'd lost his CD. Oh well, I'll try installing it again if it continues to bother him.

Make sure to have xp sp1
and the xp usb driver update that Greg points to.
Also use a certified USB 2.0 cable .
