I am having some trouble finding out how to download files using ftp with Netscape 6.2.1. I looked at the "helper applications" and the "proxies" dialogue boxes but am not finding how to set these up. I also sent an email to NS but they have not replied.

I am on a LAN. Netscape's help menus are useless as far as showing me examples of what to type in the "helper applications" box, and I am not sure, since I am directly connected to my LAN ISP, if I can change the proxy to manual and enter the URL.

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it. If I posted to the wrong forum I apologize as I did not see any listing browsers, etc.

I don't know how similar Netscape is between their latest versions of 4.79 & 6.21, but I've been using Netscape more and more for ftp'ing that WS_FTP, just for the convenience. Their both good programs but anywho, I'm assuming the ftp server you're trying to download from does not allow annonymous logins, and without knowing exactly what the situation is or what you've tried already, I just type in the address as such:
ftp://user@ftp.something.com

Then it prompts me for the password and I can connect. If you're dealing with an ftp server that uses an upload / download ratio, where you can only download a certain amount after uploading files, then you must use a dedicated ftp program, such as WS_FTP, neither Navigator or IE support those ftp functions.

If you're having questions if you can simply connect to the server in the first place, go to a command prompt and type:
ping ftp.something.com

That command will let you know if you can connect to any particular server or if you're blocked from accessing it somehow. Basically speaking, if you cannot ping the server, there is no way you'll ever get Netscape or IE or any other ftp software to connect to that server.

Dakota's right. If you can't PING it, traceroute to it and see where you're dying.

If you can PING the ftp site and you're using Netscape, simply type in the following in the address bar:

ftp://username:password@ftp.blahblahblah.com

ftp://username@ftp.blahblahblah.com

Thanks for the info. I went back to the site to get the address, and just for kicks, hit the file to ftp. And lo and behold, it downloaded! I did'nt do any of what you listed, but I have saved your info to a file in case I need it later. I'm sure I will. My LAN provider has been having lots of trouble for the last 3 months.

Again, much thanks to you all.
