I would like to set up a FTP server as I have a couple of friends I would like to send large files to.
I do not know anything regarding FTP so I have been looking on the internet and found a couple of things.
First I downloaded N0-IP a program that gives me a host name instead of a dynamic address.
Then I downloaded War FTP.
I would like to know 'where do I go from here'
Do I need any other programs and how do I transfer files.
Also can I check if its working from my own computer.
Thanks for any info.

Download WS_FTP Server. It asks for your Ip addy, and lets you set up usernames and passwords. You then set up which drive or folder you will be sharing, and thats it. Give your friends your IP addy like this: ftp://85.115.154.187 and they enter their UN and PW and are DLing from you!

Hi Precomp
Thanks for the info, a couple of other things i am on cable but have a dynamic address is there anything I can do about that?
Also I have a small network (2 computers) behind a Linksys BRFSR41 router, will that make any difference?
Thanks again.

Wow, wallie32, Im in exact same situation. Im gonna mess around and see what I can get working...

Since you're using No-IP it doesn't matter that you have a dynamic address. No-IP will resolve the dynamic address with a hostname you choose. Set-up an account at No-IP (it's free) and they'll walk you through all the steps. I'm using No-IP for my FTP server and it works great.

Regarding your router you'll need to login to the router's setup page and forward whichever ports your FTP server will be using (default port is 21). Also, you'll need to enter the IP address of the PC running the FTP server (hope this makes sense).

Anyways....GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks sfgman63
The only thing I am not to sure on now is my IP address.
Is this the address I get when using
Run>CMD>ipconfig /all
One item is listed as 'IP Address'

Thanks again.

You have both a "public" and a NAT-assigned "private" LAN IP. The ipconfig results show the latter. You want to have your friends now the first address.

A very good step-by-step guide how to set this up for your linksys:

Thanks
The step-by-step guide seems to be a dead link.
How would I find my public address?
thanks
wallie

To find your public address, login to your router's setup page and select the "Status" tab, you should see the router screen. This screen should show your public IP address.

I know you said earlier you're using a dynamic address. You don't want to give this IP address to your friends because obviously this will change. What you'll want to do is use this IP address when you setup your hostname with No-IP.

Also, to get more info on setting up the router search the knowledge base on the Linksys website.

Hope this helps!!!!

I just clicked it an it worked perfectly.

The link is to a section of the "Linksys FAQ" hosted by one of the great Linksys forums available on the web: the BroadBand Reports Linksys Forum:
When in the forum, click on Linsksy FAQ at the top of the page.

Many thanks to everone I am up and running.
