I have been trying for about 5 hours now to try and get a nice simple serv-u server setup and you better believe I cannot get it. I have read the knowledge base for connecting throug a firewall and using dynamic IP addressing and I still can't get the thing to work. So lets talk about each issue first and see if I'm ok.
1) Right now I have dynamic DNS enabled under serv-u. I downloaded DNS4me which takes my dynamic IP address and makes it a static one. So I do have a static address of 24.224.211.***(not that I don't trust anybody here). My IP name looks something like johndoe.dns4me.com, and so everything is good there. So that is the dynamic address taken care of, the knowledge base says that users can now use my domain name (johndoe.dns4me.com) to access my server.
2) The knowledge base for configuring ftp serv-u using a firewall/router is a little vague on some points. The first thing it tells you is to forward ports 20/21 to the internal IP address that serv-u is listening on. Ok, an internal IP address is what your router assigns your computer, correct me if I'm wrong, and an external address is the address of your machine. When I type ipconfig at command line it says my ip address is 192.168.0.100 and when my server is running (under activity menu for your domain), it says my server is listening on port 21, IP 192.168.0.100, 127.0.0.1 (second is default gateway I guess). So that is fine, in my router setting I forward port 20/21 to IP address 192.168.0.100 because that is where serv-u is listening.
3) Then it tells me to setup the IP for Passive mode to reflect the actual IP Address and not the Internal IP address Serv-U sees. So I do this, following the great knowledge at the knowledge base, being sure not to enter any IP addresses because I am set up for dynamic IP addressing and not static.
4) It then tells me that I should open ports 2000-2010 in serv-u and then this is the confusing part "use router configuration to map the same port range to the serv-u server". I am confused by this and I couldn't find one right answer, so I went into my router configurations under virtual server and I mapped the ports 2000-2010 to my external IP address because it told me to map them to the PC running serv-u. Then it says:
"You should now be able to connect from any FTP Client using PASV mode".
Then I felt like telling them I couldn't. Anyways, it doesn't work for me when I try to connect using client software, namely, ftp voyager. I can connect to the address 127.0.0.1 and 192.168.0.100 because it is my own computer, but when anybody else tries to access my server they get the timed out error. I also tried connecting to my johndoe.dns4me.com domain name because it said I would be able to connect to that but I couldn't do that either. I am terribly confused and I have looked everywhere for a step by step method but can't find anything good. Somebody with knowledge please tell me what to do.
