Looking through the currnet threads, i have found that my problem is the same as Tony_y2k's problem (further down the page) Like Tony_y2k, i have just built a new website on fireworks 3 and am having trouble with links on the page, when it appears on the web. Some are not turning up on the page, where i know i put them. I am not using Dreamweaver 3 as my FTP, but a programme called 'Cute FTP/cute HTML'. Could this be the fault of the FTP programme that i am using??

Fireworks has a really wierd way of remembering where you want your links, pictures, images etc.

I have noticed this on rollovers and image swaps. The initial image is on frame 1 and the over image or image to be swapped during rollover is on frame 2. The location is written in the javascript using the top left corner of the page as x,y coordinates 0,0.

once you export the web page and open it as an HTML file it is reading your image to be located at say 90,316

This is fine if the table of images remain at left align but if you try and center it or put it on a layer in dreamweaver or whatever...it will still set the image rollovers at coordinate 90,316.

I don't know if I am making any sense at all but this is exactly what is going on. It took me forever to figure out the reasoning behing the whole thing. Something Macromedia should definitely fix in later revisions.

I have Fireworks 4 and the problem is still active.

I am still looking into this and hope to come up with a solution. I do not think your ftp is at fault here. Ya' Gotta Love It!:)X-)

After re-reading your post...I am not sure I even answered your question...what I mentioned is a very real problem but perhaps not yours at the moment....

I went back and read TonyY2K's post and it appears that you guys are having trouble with actual hyperlinks.

How are you setting up your links? are you inserting a slice or hotspot over the image and specifying the URL in the objects panel? (Windows/Objects)

Or...are you setting up the links in Dreamweaver or another HTML editor after export? Ya' Gotta Love It!:)X-)

Thanks for the info. To create a link to another site and to do my picture links, I am inserting a hotspot tool over the photos/links, and then typing the URL in the behaviours URL window. After exporting the page, using the slice objects (and double checking every link on the page is correct), I upload them (the pages) to the web, but not with Dreamweaver. Like Tony_y2k, I use a programme called 'cuteFTP' and 'cuteHTML' to upload everything to the web. Does this information help you any more?

So when you publish your page to your local computer everything works perfectly. That is the end of the line as far as FW is concerned - it won't be changing anything from there. But desisions you have made within FW might affect how your page uploads.

Are you linking using relative links within your directory structure. If you're not sure, go to the page on your hard drive using a browser and rollover one of the links that is not working when you upload it. In the status bar of the browser (down the bottom) it should give you the address the link will take you to. If there is a full address path (eg including your drive letter etc) then the link wont upload properly. If it is relative (eg images/pic.gif) then it should be fine.

Next, check what the link is being changed to. Go to the page once it is uploaded and do the same thing, check the status bar and compare the link address. Let us know if there is a difference so we can try to figure out why.

When exported the page(s) from fireworks, the page divides into many .gifs, and i upload all these .gifs and the .htm file. I have done everything you said, and i have noticed a pattern in the problem i am having. It's near enough the same links i'm having trouble every time. When i export the page from fireworks, i export it using slice objects - is this the correct thing to do?? or should i select another button?? Many of the links are situated between two slices, and maybe this is why they won't work. What do you think?

Geoffrey...If you will email the png file or upload it to the web so I can download and analyze...I will tell you what the problem is in a matter of minutes.

jeffreysphillips@excite.com Ya' Gotta Love It!:)X-)

I will be back around 10:30 CST... If you wanna send the file I will look at it then and let you know what the problem is. Ya' Gotta Love It!:)X-)

10:30 AM that is..

I am still half asleep and submitted it as a new thread...lol Ya' Gotta Love It!:)X-)

i have uploaded my front page onto the web about 30 mins ago. The page can be found at and as you will see the problem is that some of the links on the actual page (not on the nav. bar) situated at the bottom of the page, are not appearing where i put them on the png file before i exported it. Hope you can help us find the problem so i can finally get the problem sorted out.

I went and looked at the site...but without the png file it is virtually impossible to analyze completely. I studied the source for a bit but I am not exactly a javascript guru so there was little I could do there.

If you get a chance today...send the file and I will let you know in a matter of minutes what is wrong.

If you wanna upload the png file I can get it that way also. Right now it is a gif which does not allow me to break it apart.
Ya' Gotta Love It!:)X-)

I have sent you the png file as requested to the e-mail address you gave me above. I hope you get it ok.

Geoffrey... I downloaded the file and opened it in Fireworks. I looked at the objects panel to see what the links where supposed to be.

I then uploaded the file to the following address without modifying anything (except I did place a slice over your bus photo and changed the optimization to jpg which Is better for photos)

All the links look good to me. They match what is in Fireworks and unless you can tell mne what I am missing then I see no problems at all. It is a little intensive as far as file size.

I used WS-FTP LE to upload.

Go look at it and tell me if anything is wrong or if there is something that I m missing. Ya' Gotta Love It!:)X-)

Thanks for having a look at it. mmm..... it's very odd. Every link on the page you uploaded works, and what's very odd is that most of those links on the bottom of my original page ( do not work. If you have a look at my page, you will see that only 3 or 4 of those links do work. Could it be the FTP programme that's the cause of the problem?, because i did originally use 'cuteFTP' and now i'm using 'FTPexplorer', but if it works with your FTP, maybe i should try that. What do you think??

I do not really see how the FTP program could affect anything but I guess it is worth a try to use another FTP. Ya' Gotta Love It!:)X-)

well, i've tried another FTP, infact i've tried a dozen or so FTP programmes today, and they are all the same - the links don't seem to appear as usual. mmmmm.....i have had a look at my png file all the links are there before i export the page(s) and I know they have been done properly, otherwise they wouldn't have appeared on the page that you uploaded. It's got to be something to do with the FTP programmes and how the page uploads. If you know of any other theory, please let me know because now i have absolutely no idea what's going on.

You do know that you could always open the HTML file online...view the source and copy paste all the HTML code into notepad. From there you could look at your HTML...find the links and hard key in any corrections that need to be made.

Re-upload to the web using an FTP program of your choice.

And...see what happens. At this point... it is merely the process of elimination. Ya' Gotta Love It!:)X-)

In answer to your question, no i don't use Dreamweaver, but i do have Dreamweaver 3 that came with my Fireworks 3 CD. If you suggest that i use it, then i will load it off my CD. Thanks for the info. I'll let you know how i get on.

just a quick note - you said that i could view the HTML file online. Now that i have installed Dreamweaver 3, could you explain how i do this.
